Las cortinas de humo solo funcionan con dos tipos de personas. Las incapaces de prestar atención a varios problemas a la vez y las que eligen concentrarse en la cortina y no ver nada más. Para quienes no tienen el problema intelectual de no percibir más de un objeto al mismo tiempo ni el problema ético de volverse monotemáticos por conveniencia, las cortinas de humo son inocuas. Ni siquiera es necesario no prestarles atención. Sepuede hablar sobre ellas y también sobre las cosas importantes. Además, muchas veces, las cosas que se usan como cortinas de humo son importantes.

Es importante discutir el intento de promover formas legales de esclavitud. Es interesante hablar de las posibilidades de la selección en el mundial. Es humano condolerse de la muerte de un querido periodista deportivo. Es relevante sublevarse ante muertes misteriosas y crímenes sin castigo. Es crucial responder a quienes quieren implantar la pena de muerte. Todos esos temas tienen valor en sí mismos, incluso si sabemos que, cuando la prensa y los políticos los promueven, suelen hacerlo para que no se hable de otras cosas.

La solución es hablar de todo eso y también de las otras cosas. De hecho, debemos preguntarnos cuál es la relación entre eso y lo demás. Por ejemplo: todos nuestros gobernantes vivos de los últimos treinta años están implicados en juicios o investigaciones por corrupción. ¿Qué relación hay entre eso y el hecho de que seamos un país incapaz de pensar en un tema sin perder de vista ese otro? La relación es evidente: la demolición de nuestra inteligencia (nuestro aparato intelectual, nuestro sistema educativo) a manos de los corruptos les permite hoy a ellos maniobrar para eludir a la justicia. No hay que darles gusto. Hay que hablar de todo sin dejar nunca de hablar sobre ellos.

It is human to be condoled by the death of a beloved sports journalist. It is relevant to rebel against mysterious deaths and crimes without punishment. It is crucial to respond to those who want to impose the death penalty. All these issues have value in themselves, even if we know that, when the press and politicians promote them, they usually do it so that they do not talk about other things.

The solution is to talk about all that and also about other things. In fact, we must ask ourselves what is the relationship between that and the rest. For example: all our living rulers of the last thirty years are involved in trials or investigations for corruption. What is the relationship between that and the fact that we are a country incapable of thinking about a subject without losing sight of that other one? The relationship is clear: the demolition of our intelligence (our intellectual apparatus, our educational system) at the hands of the corrupt allows them today to maneuver to elude justice. You do not have to like them. You have to talk about everything and never stop talking about them.
