EL BARDO MAN DEL CALLAO

Desde muy pequeño, siempre fue vivaz, es decir cuando aún no hablaba bien Oswaldo cuando le preguntaban ¿Cómo te llamas? El respondía prontamente «Man Mateo». Es que no podía pronunciar correctamente su apellido paterno Huamán. De ahí viene el sobre nombre de «MAN».

Pero quién era este personaje. Trabajador desde muy tierna edad, ayudaba a su señora madre, la tía Justina Mateo, en la venta de frutas, en un puesto ambulante, frente al hospital «Carrión». En ese tiempo en ese lugar  existía sólo una gran tienda administrada por unos orientales y nada más.

Con el tiempo, comenzó a aprender a hacer cortes de carne, ubicaba muy bien el lomo fino, etc. Hasta llegó a tener un puesto de venta en el mercado del distrito de La Punta, en el Callao.

Cierta vez se le ocurrió estudiar en la universidad, inclusive llegó a ingresar a la Universidad Nacional del Callao, a la carrera de Ingeniería pesquera. Pero en ese tiempo conoció a la mujer que fue el amor de su vida Donny, con ella tuvo cuatro hijos. Casualmente con ella tuvo su primera hija y cuando posteriormente su esposa resultó de nuevo embarazada; él estaba convencido que iba a ser padre de un niño, de un varón. Pero cómo es la vida, nace una niña a la cual le pusieron  por nombre María y actualmente la conocemos hasta ahora como Marita, hoy es una señora. Por ese tiempo «Lucho Barrios», comenzó a interpretar el bolero Mi niña bonita. Así es que MAN al escuchar esa canción quedó impresionado y la hizo parte de su repertorio; porque en ese tiempo se dedicó a ser un cantante ambulante que hoy son conocidos como mangueros.

Dentro de su repertorio figuraba un conocido vals Romance en la Parada de Augusto Polo Campos. A MAN le encantó tanto que también hizo suyo.

En sus correrías, siempre andaba con su primo Vicente Rojas Torres, excelente guitarrista, muy reconocido en el Callao –alguna vez y pronto escribiré algo de este señor-, que dicho sea de paso es mi cuñado.

Fue muy sentido y emotivo el deceso de MAN. Hasta el mismo velorio llegaron sus amigos cantaron las canciones que MAN interpretaba.

Su vida como músico itinerante, lo llevó a difundir su arte por los distritos de Surquillo, Barranco, Chorrillos, Surco. A veces subían a los buses, cantaban y solicitaban la solidaridad de los viajeros. En otras oportunidades ingresaban a cualquier restaurante interpretaban sus canciones y nuevamente a solicitar el reconocimiento, la solidaridad, por la difusión de su arte.

Cuenta que, algunas veces, en plena actuación de algún bar; alguien de la concurrencia le solicitaba llevarlos a alguna casa, para armar, una jarana. Entonces ellos poniéndose de acuerdo, iban a donde los solicitaban. Indudablemente, MAN, era un artista consumado, entregado en alma corazón y vida de nuestra música tanto criolla, como boleros e inclusive interpretaba huaynos, con un estilo muy propio.

Abajo desfilarán algunas fotos del velorio y el entierro de MAN, que como todo verdadero chalaco se realizó en el cementerio «Baquijano».

But who was this character? A worker from a very young age, he helped his mother, Aunt Justina Mateo, in the sale of fruits, in a street vendor, in front of the «Carrión» hospital. At that time in that place there was only a large store run by Orientals and nothing else.

Over time, he began to learn how to make cuts of meat, he placed the fine loin very well, etc. He even had a sales position in the market of the district of La Punta, in Callao.

Once it occurred to him to study at the university, he even entered the National University of Callao, to the career of Fisheries Engineering. But at that time he met the woman who was the love of his life Donny, with her he had four children. Coincidentally with her he had his first daughter and when his wife subsequently became pregnant again; he was convinced that he was going to be the father of a boy, of a boy. But what life is like, a girl is born and they named her Maria and now we know her as Marita, today she is a lady. Around that time «Lucho Barrios», began to interpret the bolero Mi niña bonita. So MAN when listening to that song was impressed and made it part of his repertoire; because at that time he dedicated himself to be a traveling singer who today are known as hoses.

Within his repertoire there was a well-known Romance waltz at the Parada de Augusto Polo Campos. MAN loved it so much that he also made it his.

In his raids, he was always with his cousin Vicente Rojas Torres, an excellent guitarist, well known in Callao -sometimes and soon I will write something of this gentleman-, which incidentally is my brother-in-law.

The death of MAN was very meaningful and emotional. Until the same wake came his friends sang the songs that MAN interpreted.

His life as an itinerant musician, led him to spread his art through the districts of Surquillo, Barranco, Chorrillos, Surco. Sometimes they would get on buses, sing and ask for the solidarity of travelers. On other occasions they entered any restaurant they interpreted their songs and again to request recognition, solidarity, for the dissemination of their art.
