A la edad de nueve años, Runyan desarrolló la enfermedad de Stargardt, que es una forma de degeneración macular que la dejó legalmente ciega. Marla Runyan ha sido tres veces campeona nacional en los 5000 metros femeninos. Ella ganó cuatro medallas de oro en los Juegos Paralímpicos de verano de 1992. En 1996 ganó medalla de plata en los Juegos Paralímpicos en el lanzamiento de peso y de oro en el pentatlón. En el año 2000 se convirtió en la primera atleta paralímpica legalmente ciego que compitió en los Juegos Olímpicos de Sydney, Australia. MARLA RUNYAN - BLIND

At the age of nine, Runyan developed Stargardt's disease, which is a form of macular degeneration that left her legally blind. Marla Runyan has been three times national champion in the women's 5000 meters. She won four gold medals at the 1992 Summer Paralympic Games. In 1996, she won the silver medal in the Paralympic Games in the gold and pentathlon shots. In 2000 she became the first legally blind Paralympic athlete to compete at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. She has several American records and in 2001, she co-wrote and published her autobiography "Without a Goal Line: My Life as I See It"
